Many in our community work multiple jobs to support their families. Most students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite these challenges, our students continue to persevere. I have the privilege of teaching English Language Learners. Students come from 13 countries and speak 2-3 languages each! They translate for their parents when buying groceries, calling a doctor, or speaking to school staff. This responsibility has created a group of mature and empathetic kids. Although my students are very bright and able to speak English, they struggle with reading and writing. Increasing their literacy is the focus of every class lesson and activity. I believe that students thrive when they feel loved and secure in our schools and classrooms. We choose reading materials, podcasts, and short films that lend themselves to discussions topics including our emotional well-being, social skills, and acts of kindness.
