Untangling the Food Chain

My students need activities centered around ecosystems and food webs to master new Middle School Life Science (MS-LS1,2) NGSS curriculum.

My Students

In the rural part of California, where I teach 7th grade science, students come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. One thing they have in common is they are inquisitive, love to learn and desire to understand the world around them! These students need the tools (new labs, materials and supplies) to understand the new curriculum NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). This will enable them to excel as our next generation of learners.

In my classroom I have a wide variety of learners!

From GATE kids to struggling learners. It is a beautiful thing to see them working side by side. With the wide diversity in ability and prior knowledge, I have to be ready for many levels of student questioning, ability and performance. Differentiating for these kids is challenging, but it is key to their learning!

My Project

My students need materials on Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems to be able to learn the new NGSS 7th grade science curriculum. The NewPath Learning "Ecology" Bulletin Board Chart Set, Ecosystems Food Chains/Webs posters and Carson Dellosa Mark Twain Habitat Bulletin Board Sets will allow students to be surrounded by the information we are learning about during this unit. Students will use these informational posters to assist them in creating explanatory models of specific biomes and food chains.

They say "a picture is worth a thousand words", and with middle school kids, this is so true.

The Environmental Video Library Series DVD collection and Biology Essentials: The Worlds Biomes: Desert to Rainforest DVD, are wonderful instructional tools that will allow my kids to see organism interactions (food chains/webs) up close and personal. It is so much more engaging to see the interactions, rather than just read about them.

The "How is a Food Web Organized Lab", "EcoQuest Biomes Comparison Kit", and Speak Easies Food WebEnergy Pyramid Kits will allow students of different knowledge levels and learning abilities to access this curriculum. They will work together during lab days to understand carrying capacity, energy pyramids, resources in ecosystems, biomes and biodiversity.

When NGSS is fully implementation, about 95% of my existing 7th grade curriculum will be different. This means I need to locate and procure new lab activities and investigations for my kids. Your help in funding this project will help me to give my kids the tools they need to be excellent next generation learners.
