Unlocking the Braille Code

Help me give my students a braille primer, entitled Just Enough to Know Better, to assist their sighted parents in learning braille.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Gaw's classroom raised $419

My Students

We are a K-12 residential school for students with sensory impairments. All of our students are sensory impaired and many of them have an additional disability. We have students living on and off-campus. Our residential students come from all over our state and live on our campus Sunday through Friday. Our school is considered a high poverty school.

Our blind students become literate and increase their opportunities by learning to read and write braille.

According to the National Braille Press, "research shows that braille literacy directly correlates with academic achievement and employment."

My Project

I would like to provide parents, of elementary students with blindness, a book to learn braille (i.e. braille primer). The braille primer would assist sighted parents with learning the basics of the braille code. Learning the braille code would enable these parents to assist their children with learning to read and write in braille. Learning the braille code would help them support their child's literacy efforts and with monitoring the quality of their home and class work during the pandemic. Also, they can assist their child with braille activities outside of the classroom (i.e. creating a grocery list with their favorite foods) which may increase their motivation to read.
