Unlocking Science by Breaking in

Help me give my students the experience of solving problems and unlocking mysteries while teaching science, so they will break into these boxes by unlocking keys as they solve the clues.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious, questioning and positively excited about science. They can get really passionate about their projects and are incredibly motivated to share what they have created. My students become very proud of their work and they feel a sense of accomplishment when their teachers, parents and peers notice how much effort they put into it.

My students really enjoy doing hands-on activities that allow them to work in groups and gives them a chance to learn with each other.

Anything that allows them time and space to learn together, they will put their whole hearts into. They enjoy getting the freedom and independence that comes along with such hands-on projects as well.

Our city in Yuma, Arizona, is in the middle of the desert. It can sometimes be difficult to relate to certain content because they are not exposed to it. It really helps them to create experiences that cement they're learning.

My Project

These materials will make a difference to my students' learning by making the content exciting and hands-on. Many science concepts can be confusing and vague and they require going through certain layers to understand the whole. It can also be challenging to get the students to engage with certain topics when they are not directly interested in the topic. With these materials, students will be able to get excited about any topic.

Students will be detectives and scientists as they receive a story with a problem that they must solve.

They will get a mysterious box with a set of locks on it that they must break into, in order to solve the problem. They will need to figure out the clue to each lock before they can move on to the next and eventually, get into the box itself.

Students will work together in order to beat the team next to them in friendly competition. Breakout boxes like these can be so engaging for even the most difficult student. They enjoy the rush of unlocking each lock and getting closer to finding out the contents of the box.
