Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach instructional technology for grades K-5 and grades 9-12. My students are future programmers, engineers, scientists, CEOs, developers, etc. Each comes with their own unique perspective of computer science and technology. They come from various backgrounds and have different abilities. I can confidently say that my students come into my lab with the mindset that they can learn anything related to technology whether it is coding, robotics, film editing, or creative ways to present information. We have some off days, but most days end with a little computer dance party or some typing karaoke.

When my students enter my lab, I want them to feel that I am doing whatever I can to make them feel safe and supportive.

When they walk into my lab, they have smiles on their faces, excited for my class. I want them to leave with even bigger smiles and a sense of pride at what they accomplished in class. Also, if they walk into my class and they are struggling, I hope that after some validation and encouragement, they leave with a smile.

My Project

Our labs are hubs of innovation, creativity, troubleshooting, and improving. When programmers step into the lab, they feel inspired to think and create. We are very fortunate to have so much in our labs for our programmers to learn and create. We are even more fortunate that our materials will be able to be accessed during hybrid and remote learning. Our current set of iPads are aging and need to be replaced with more current models. All of our programmers use the iPads, whether it is programmers in K using ChatterPix to create their Black History Month movie, fourth-graders creating a program for our Dash robot to deliver school supplies from class to class or high schoolers using GarageBand to record, edit, and produce an album, and iPads are a crucial tool for our students.

An updated iPad will help our programmers continue learning and creating in both our labs.

A new iPad for the labs will allow all programmers to continue programming, editing videos, and creating music. Our robot family will love connecting to our new iPad via Bluetooth. Oh, the codes we will write with apps like Tynker and Blocky! Programmers will be able to access the latest version of apps like Slides and iMovie (apps that our programmers use to show off what they know). Our programmers can also use the iPad to work with other tools in our labs, such as our Lego SPIKE robot kits and our Cricut Maker.
