My school is dedicated to creating a meaningful hands-on learning experience through the pedagogy of Project-Based Learning (PBL). As a teacher, it is my goal to inspire students to seek out real-world problems or challenges and focus their learning on how to create resolutions to these issues. I want students to learn how to take charge of their learning.
The students at my school are highly motivated through the PBL pedagogy and have created truly remarkable projects that showcase their learning.
As students learn through the PBL process, they learn how to research subjects, critically think about important issues, and find a way to share their thinking with others. The engagement that occurs during this learning process is evident as many students often go above and beyond when researching their subject. Twice a year, the students at my school put their projects on display for the public to see. During this time, students (TK- 5th Grade) explain their projects
My Project
The materials I am requesting for my school will support my already started effort in building a guided reading bookroom for the students at our school. This bookroom will include six copies of trade books on carefully selected topics that align with the California Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Six copies of each book are necessary for small group reading instruction and buddy reading.
The goal of this bookroom is to house a rich variety of trade books that can be used in guided reading groups to support projects that students are interested in researching.
So far, my school bookroom has received money from our PTA and Title 1 funding. This money was used to purchase guided reading books on high-interest topics (both fiction and nonfiction) from students at my school. We are also planning to buy books that are culturally diverse that align with the science and social studies framework. Finally, some of the money was also used to buy bins and ziplock bags to organize the bookshelf.
With your support, we will continue to build a magnificent bookroom for students by purchasing more high-interest books. In addition, the bookroom will also need organizational materials such as book bins and ziplock bags for ease of use purposes.
