Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love space, stars, moons and the planets. Learning about movement in the solar system and how it effects their world daily will make a connection to them and space exploration.
My students are conscious, hard working third graders.
They come from a diverse area where some students will never travel far from their home neighborhoods. Our school is a public charter school of choice. We are fortunate to provide a program that teaches the whole child that includes art, music, band, and computer classes. Our students do not do homework. Teachers at our school feel, as professionals, it is our responsibility to teach the child academics and not the parent. We invite parental support but do not require it to give the students what they need to be successful personally and academically. We are a college preparatory school. Our goal is to produce life long learners.
My Project
The resources will give the students an opportunity to explore and learn hands on. With solar system manipulative's, maps, puzzles, and books I will be able to teach with a multi-dimensional format. Students will travel with their favorite character, Flat Stanley, from space to the moon and back to the earth. They will discover, with Flat Stanley, the earth in different hemispheres and study how movement changes time, seasons, sunrise/sunset, and moon phases are different in all parts of the world. Students need to connect their world with what they are learning and apply the impact of movement in space.
They will compare their own neighborhood and conditions to those who live in a variety of places in the world.
Students will take their information and write scripts from their chosen location, what they discover, and create a travel log. From this they will write scripts, dramatize, and produce a video from 5 different countries, which will be presented and shared with other students, administration, and parents in a proof of learning format.
