My Students
Our school is in a low income, rural community, where many of the students have not been out of our county. We have 80% free/reduced lunches. Our 10th grade history curriculum covers WWII and the Holocaust. Our students show a great deal of interest and empathy for this period. We are fortunate to have a Holocaust Museum located a couple of hours away.We hope to give them a meaningful learning experience by touring the museum and listening to the experiences of an actual Holocaust survivor. They will also get the added experience of leaving our rural area and seeing a more urban setting.
My Project
Public schoolchildren in Michigan are now required to learn about the Armenian genocide as part of their social studies curriculum. The history teachers would like to give the history students a visual, audible, and real life experience to learn that these experiences are not just a plot in a movie or book, but something that happened to real people.
Students will be able to tour the museum, then listen to a Holocaust survivor and learn firsthand the experiences of that time in history.
This is an invaluable experience, and there are getting to be few survivors still alive to tell their stories.
