Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and enthusiastic learners. They come to school with a range of abilities and aptitudes. Many come from poor and working class families, and some are still acquiring fluency in English.
Although they come from a community with fewer privileges than others in the Silicon Valley, our students have unlimited potential.
We are working hard every day achieve so that they can compete with the best of the students in the Silicon Valley. Our students deserve to have quality materials to help them achieve their personal best.
My Project
One of my students' favorite time of day is our class novel time. Its right after lunch when we all just sit together to read and listen to narratives. Sometimes its stories in a familiar setting with a lot of humor and other times it is tales told from far away places that allow them to learn more about people and places in the world they have never been to. Its really a time for them to enjoy reading, there are no worksheets nor any tests to take.
I don't have any other expectation of my students at this time but to open their minds and enjoy literature.
The book set I am requesting fills a need in the our reading library for a female perspective. We have several class novel sets that have male protagonists, but need more books with a strong female lead. The book, "Words in the Dust" would help us fill this void. This book tells the story of, Zulaikha, a girl from Afghanistan after the time of the Taliban rule. She has many hopes and dreams including getting her cleft palate mended and an opportunity to go to school. It is an exciting and engaging book that would introduce my students to a different part of the world. Reading this book would build understanding and allow them to see the commonalities we all have as human beings.
Please help us get this class set of books and audio CD so that we can expand our perspectives.
