This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
More than 4.8 million workers now earn the lowest legal pay. This calculation, for a single childless worker, shows the hard choices that have to be made living on the smallest paychecks. The foundation for smart money management is laid at an early age.
I work with an amazing group of children who are eager to learn.
I enjoy seeing the excitement in their eyes when we get ready to complete a science lab. My students come from diverse backgrounds, which make them unique. Many of my students come from low income families; however, they are the best kids on the planet.
My Project
ThinkCERCA is an online, CCSS-aligned literacy program with tools and content teachers need to help students learn to read closely, think critically, and develop powerful arguments. The first article students will read is "Money and Needs", it focuses on how economic factors influence our futures. It asks students to evaluate the impact money has on decision-making in both informational and literary texts. The short stories asks student to trace how money influenced a character’s actions, whereas the informational text set focuses on the debate of whether or not teenagers should work. Students will be given a research project where they research the average cost of living in certain cities in the United States. This is a great way for students to really see the expense of living and use the raw numbers as a way to think about the importance of finances in their futures.
Using ThinkCERCA as a tool for instructional leadership, students can more effectively lead personalized learning efforts in the 21st century.
As a result of these lessons they will develop financial literacy skills to empower them to be agents of change.
