This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Even though we live in an agricultural community, many of my students have not had the opportunity to learn to grow their own food. This project will allow me to incorporate agricultural practices into my science classes.
These materials will allow me to revitalize our school garden while incorporating agriculture and food systems lessons into my 7th grade science curriculum.
Students will be able to work together to create an outdoor classroom where they can experience the joys and challenges of food production. I will then help them make connections to our global food systems and challenges we face with increasing human populations, land use, and climate change.
Additionally these materials will help us in increasing biodiversity on our campus which is an ongoing project for our 7th graders, following an annual biodiversity study project we complete in partnership with a nearby state park.
