Understanding Human Experiences: Books by Diverse Authors for Diverse Students
My students need great books that they can see themselves in and see the experiences of others in. Having both window and mirror books allows students to better understand the variety of human experiences.
My students are a wonderful group of young people who are excited and eager to learn about the world around them and make a difference in it. They come to school excited to learn about the environment they live in and the history that has shaped our present.
They ask questions, take on challenges, and are always wanting to learn more.
Each child in my classroom has a unique learning style and has their own passion they want to fulfill. Each of them comes from a culturally and linguistically diverse background that has shaped their passion and experience. Each of them deserves the resources required to help them use their passions to make a difference in the world. I am so grateful to work with this group of inspiring, young leaders.
My Project
These books will allow students to read about people who have had both similar experiences to them and different experiences from them. The authors of these books tell stories of children and people who are often left out of children's literature. This allows students to again a better understanding of the world around them and how they can use their talents to make a difference.
These books will be used to help students develop their literacy skills, their own identities, and build compassion for the identities and experiences of others.
These books will be used as read alouds, mentor texts, and for students' own individual reading practice. Titles such as "I'm New Here" and "I See You" will be used as mentor texts to help teach students how make connections from literature to their own lives and will be used to help build empathy for others. Titles such as "Pashmina," "Anya's Ghost," and "Real Friends" are graphic novels that will be added to my classroom library to support students' independent reading and help build a wider variety of books for students to enjoy. Books that allow children to see a wide variety of human experiences will help them to empathize with others and understand that every experience is shaped in different ways. These texts will allow students to build their literacy skills while critically thinking about other peoples' experiences.
