Understanding How the Past and the Present Intersect

Help me give my students water bottles for study stickers to help study history.

My Project

We are using the water bottles as a metaphor for the Three Levels of Knowledge: Acquisitional Knowledge: Being acquainted with something (e.g., knowing what a water bottle is). Propositional Knowledge: Understanding how we know something to be true (e.g., knowing the properties of water and why it's essential for life). Practical Knowledge: Applying what we know to make sense of life (e.g., using a water bottle to stay hydrated).

We will relate how these connect to the study of history.

Acquisitional: Knowing facts about historical events. Propositional: Understanding why those events happened and their significance. Practical: Applying lessons from history to make informed decisions in the present.

We will use the analogy of a water bottle to explain these concepts further:

Acquisitional: Students describe what a water bottle is and how they use it.

Propositional: Discuss why it’s important to stay hydrated and how water bottles are designed for this purpose.

Practical: Consider how knowing this information affects their daily choices, such as bringing a water bottle to class to stay hydrated.

Now, apply the same exercise to a historical event (e.g., the Civil Rights Movement):

Acquisitional: What happened during the Civil Rights Movement?

Propositional: Why did it happen, and what were the key factors?

Practical: How does understanding the Civil Rights Movement help us address current social justice issues?

Our weekly lessons are set up like this. Ending on how the topic of the week helps us solve or discuss a current issue/topic. The bottles will serve as a reminder of this throughout the course. (And it will keep students hydrated.)
