Understanding Homelessness

My students need to learn about the world around them. Living in a large urban city where they see (and many experience) homelessness first hand our library needs books to address this issue.

My Students

Our library is the hub of activity for our diverse population with students coming in daily with their families, classes or individually to read books. The school is an urban school with 450 K-5 students.

Our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students able to qualify for free lunch.

Also, it is one of the most racially diverse zip codes in the country and they speak a variety of languages at home including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. We have the highest ELL enrollment of any Seattle Public School.

In addition to being economically and racially diverse, our students are academically diverse. We have 2/3 of our school population in an immersion program and are taught core curriculum in either Spanish or Mandarin for half of their day.

My Project

My students want to help others. Providing books about social issues is a critical piece in helping my students to understand and empathize with others. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Sharing books in the library, like "What Can a Citizen Do?" will help my students navigate how they can become game changers themselves.

One might argue that the realities of homelessness, poverty and hunger are too much for young learners.

I haven’t found that to be the case. … young children are capable of amazing things, far more than is usually expected of them. … they understand fairness and are deeply moved and highly motivated by the recognition of injustice.
