Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade at an under-resourced public school in East New York. According to the New York City social studies standards, 5th grade students are expected to study "the geography, economics and cultures of the United States, Canada, and the nations of Latin America including the Caribbean, today." Unfortunately, my school does not offer any social studies material beyond test preparation books (for the New York State social studies exam in November). Students at my school are also required to sit for half of their lunch period in an auditorium to watch movies when the weather is too wet or cold to go outside. Most of the movies that are shown at this time are not educational in nature, and I believe this time could be better spent. I would like to acquire the Understanding Government Video set from Lakeshore Learning. This set of 7 videos covers basic topics related to U.S. government in a format that's involving, informative and easy to follow. Topics are introduced in short, manageable segments, giving students an easy-to-digest overview of America's political landscape. The videos cover the branches of government, the Bill of Rights, etc. I think this would put to good use time that is now being wasted. Please help me bring learning back to indoor lunch.
