Understanding and Experiencing Emotional Regulation
My students need additional tools to experience Social/ Emotional curriculum. Students will explore emotions and how to regulate them through card games, hands on experiences (breathing balls, mindfulness exercises), and research based curriculum (books).
The students at our school are wonderful, hardworking, and motivated to learn. We are a diverse PreK-5 school that integrates STEM into our curriculum to give students a hands-on and problem solving approach to learning.
It is one of 106 public elementary schools in the county and serves 381 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
Of those students, almost 75 percent receive free or reduced lunch, 29% of students are considered as limited English proficient, and 12% are identified for special education. Many of our students come to kindergarten with limited or no preschool experience. They are tasked with learning academics as well as emotional and behavioral self management strategies all at once.
Our county and school are beginning to talk a lot about the integration of Social/Emotional Learning that we are teaching behavior and coping strategies along with academics.
My Project
Student at Brentwood Elementary have a strong need and desire for understanding and controlling their emotions. This year, I began teaching basics of how our brain works and what tools we can use to stop, name our feelings, and calm our bodies before making a decision.
These items will help me continue this work, and make it more compelling and interactive through sensory experiences, visual aids, and more data based curriculum.
We have already seen students increase their ability to name their feelings and chose a calm down strategy, but we need more practice and experiences for all students. These books, feelings cards, breathing balls, and chime will help my once a week classroom lessons in decreasing office referrals and time off task, and increase classroom participation and community building.
