This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The secondary school this project would benefit is very unique as it is the only military-based public school in its district. The students learn discipline, structure, and respect, all the while meeting the standard requirements to attain their high school diploma. Although the school is small, it's comprised of both a middle and a high school.
Each student's mindset has been carefully influenced and shaped by the military aspect of the school, but also by the caring personalities of the teachers who see them every day.
The students who attend this school are no different from your average teenager, so they love to be social, but also enjoy learning in new and exciting ways! Taking field trips, learning hands-on, and working with others are a few techniques that help to keep students engaged in what they're learning.
Being a combined middle and high school, there are approximately 375 total students. The entire student body receives free/reduced-price breakfast and lunch during the school day. While the students as a whole may have some economic disadvantages, they still deserve the best!
Successful completion of this project will help cover the cost of student tour tickets that are required for our upcoming field trip to the Luray Caverns. This unique experience will help students put textbook content into a real world context!
Students will be exposed to chambers over one hundred feet underground to see for themselves what happens to bedrock after prolonged periods of chemical weathering!
Not only will students be capable of visiting the caverns, but they will also be transported through three different physiographic provinces of Virginia, which is another topic discussed in class that will also be experienced during this trip!
This field trip could ultimately open up a fascination for the natural world that surrounds each of my students. After discussing this trip with a few students, there's already excitement stirring, even though the trip is several months away. This is exactly the type of enthusiasm that I would like to help spread to all students! With your help, we can make this happen!
