Generative AI, social media, and constant access to electronic devices have all presented both opportunities and challenges for education at the secondary level. How to leverage their benefits and limit their negative impacts can be confusing and frustrating for both me and my students. Performing school work on personal devices like Chromebooks, while convenient from a logistics-perspective, presents its own challenges by isolating students and depersonalizing their experience in schools.\r\n\r\nIn light of all these challenges, I am extremely grateful to you all for supporting my project, \"Doing Science With Dry Erase Boards,\" this year. The materials this project provided have allowed me to get students out of their chairs, away from their screens, and working collaboratively in a novel and engaging way. Students have been using the white boards to analyze reading, work physics problems, and share ideas with each other in new and exciting ways. I have also incorporated the white boards into assisting the extracurricular activities I facilitate, including middle school track and high school National Honor Society.\r\n\r\nThe impact of the materials has had surprising and unintended effects as well. In other to give my students more room to work, I ended up placing half the white boards, along with markers, erasures, and white board cleaner, in the hallway outside my room. The science and math teacher next door to my classroom has his students use the white boards regularly to work algebra 2 problems collaboratively. Students past and present use the white boards to leave notes, draw pictures, and express themselves creatively in a spontaneous and community-building way. They have truly brought an element of joy to our corner of the school building. Thank you so much for your generous support!","fullyFundedDate":1754445422376,"projectUrl":"project/doing-science-with-dry-erase-boards/9293948/","projectTitle":"Doing Science With Dry Erase Boards!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Wester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1582192"},{"teacherId":2606840,"projectId":9291616,"letterContent":"The end-of-the-year celebrations for our graduating 8th grade students was a huge success! From the cookout to the all day adventure at a local theme park to the 8th grade dance, our students left their middle school years behind with so many wonderful memories. A huge thank you goes to you for helping to help us fund a variety of supplies and necessary items for these events.\r\n\r\nThe sodas were used at our 8th grade dance (themed Night in Dubai as voted by our 8th grade students), the popcorn and adorable reusable popcorn containers were used for our morning Marvel movie that took place before out class cookout, and the variety of chips were used at the cookout following the movie. The most exciting item from this project was the Dubai Architecture Lego kit! This was raffled off at our 8th grade dance. Throughout the night, each student's name was listed on a wheel of names and throughout the night, students were slowly knocked off the wheel. The last student remaining won the lego set! It was very exciting and the students were very into seeing if/when their name was knocked off!\r\n\r\nThank you again so much for you generous support. We're now able to take long range pictures, particularly of students playing sports, using the new lens since it has a 350 mm focal length. The pictures taken are sharp in quality and much, much closer to the action than the pictures we were able to take before!\r\n\r\nStudents are able to learn more about what focal length means as they use this new lens and take pictures. The second students look through the eyepiece they quickly understand how different the lens is compared to our standard 16-50 mm lens. It's fun to see students develop their skills and work towards creating awesome pictures for our school yearbook and social media pages!\r\n\r\nIn the fall, we'll be starting a yearbook club where students will not only create the yearbook, but will also be learning about basics of photography. This lens, along with the two other more basic ones that we have, will play a pivotal role in understanding what focal length is and what role it plays in developing individual photography styles.","fullyFundedDate":1742921321406,"projectUrl":"project/oh-snap-lets-take-pictures/8977406/","projectTitle":"Oh Snap! Nevertheless, in Week 1 of the course, students got to participate in one of the most fun and exciting hands-on labs the course offers, called Chase the Thief, in which they measure the motion of constant velocity and uniformly accelerating cars to predict when and where the cars would be at the same position.\r\n\r\nNot only did the materials you helped me purchase make the lab easy for my students to complete, but by doing the lab in the hallways, my students got the chance to show other students and teachers in the building how engaging and fun physics - a class with a reputation for being extremely difficult - can actually be. As the course continues, my goal is to do more labs outside of my classroom so that my students have room to collaborate with their new materials, and so other future physicists can be inspired to pursue this amazing discipline in years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1731101696578,"projectUrl":"project/kids-love-kinematics-experiments/8640171/","projectTitle":"Kids Love Kinematics Experiments!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Wester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1582192"},{"teacherId":2606840,"projectId":8316063,"letterContent":"Towards the end of a school year supplies often begin to dwindle fast! Trying to keep students motivated, the classroom clean, and projects in full swing is often a difficult task. Thanks to you I was able to do all three! \r\n\r\nAfter twelve years of teaching, I've learned that snacks are one of the highest forms of motivation for students. The snacks purchased through this project helped to not only ensure students stayed motivated doing school work so close to summer break, but also helped with students who were unable to focus from being a little hungry. The glue sticks helped students complete two final projects related to earth science concepts learned throughout the year. It's amazing how many glue sticks students go through in one school year! Lastly, the Clorox wipes are hands down the best item I need in my classroom - they clean up everything from glue marks to rock/mineral dust to simply the germs students leave behind each and every day!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity and I hope that you continue to support teachers like me with their projects that will help to ensure their students receive the best education possible!","fullyFundedDate":1713584995400,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-items-to-get-us-to-summer/8316063/","projectTitle":"Classroom Items to Get us to Summer!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Paschall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2606840_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1467047564272","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/majorpaschall"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_48478","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":335,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":56,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":23,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":48478,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Franklin Military Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Franklin Military Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/richmond-public-school-dist/franklin-military-academy/48478"}
