Throughout the upcoming school year, I envision my students reading "The Martian" in class on a daily basis. Some days may be independent reading while others are used to read the novel as a class, but the idea is to help strengthen reading comprehension while becoming engaged in a suspenseful, science-based novel. Using the novel as a focal point, students will predict outcomes, draw inferences, and create story flow charts that aid in their understanding of the novel. This grant will enable this idea to become a reality. Perhaps when the novel has been completed, students can even watch the recently released movie to compare their thoughts while reading to how directors put together the novel into a movie!
