Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I would like to begin by thanking all of the donors for their generous support without which many inner-city students would be left at a disadvantage when attending college or entering the work force. As the first semester comes to an end, I am happy to report that my school’s new Spanish heritage language program is quickly coming to life. It is great to see my students interested in their culture. They have enjoyed reading creation myths and Latin American legends. Likewise, they were touched by the story of a family of Mexican immigrants in Cajas de Cartón. Most recently, they have analyzed the role of the family in short stories by Gabriel García Márquez and Juan Rulfo, as well as, in a poem by Cuba’s Nicolás Guillén. My students come from all over Latin America, but the majority are of Mexican and Dominican descent. The Mexican students have been quite pleased with the readings by Mexican and Mexican-American authors. However, my Dominican students constantly ask that we read Dominican novels, especially one by Julia Alvarez. It is hard for a teacher to ignore such a request. When a student asks for a novel, I want to be able to put it in his/her hands. By boosting literacy in my Spanish Heritage language class, my students will be at an advantage when applying to college, as they will have the skills necessary to discuss and analyze literature in a language other than English. In fact, the skills that they learn in Spanish class will be useful in their English classes as well. Therefore, I am asking for sixty copies of “En el tiempo de las mariposas” by Dominican born writer, Julia Álvarez.
