Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Between the walls of our school, the majority of our 900 plus students are economically disadvantaged. Our children struggle daily with obstacles that we as adults can not imagine. Most have free or reduced lunch and their family dynamic is not one would consider typical. This year alone has been a struggle for all students with the aftermath of Harvey and the weather affecting school days. The readjustment coming back was very fast paced and we held students accountable for high stakes at the same time.
Despite the odds that our students have faced, they have shown perseverance and commitment to their learning.
Our students come to school eager and enthusiastic about a new day ahead of them above all.
My Project
Many of the students at our school do not have the resources needed to be successful at school. As a teacher in a Title I school with a high poverty ratio, more than half are minorities mixed with diverse students new to the country. This year, many of our students do not have the attire for our Bilingual Spelling Bee. Families do not have the money to buy a shirt to coordinate with our yellow and black theme, so I am reaching out to help our students feel involved and appreciated.
This project will improve our students' school lives because it will establish and strengthen our school culture.
It will bring our community together in a way Rodriguez Elementary hasn't before! I want to lessen the burden parents and children already have at home by proving them with an item they may reuse at any time. Wearing these shirts will be a reward to our students as they are showing dedication and commitment to our Bilingual Spelling Bee.
