Ukuleles For Young Musicians

My students need ukuleles to play, to accompany their singing and prepare them for middle school guitar.

My Students

My students are curious, motivated, talented musicians who are eager to learn! I'm lucky that I get to teach (almost) the same students every year--my current 4th and 5th grade students have been my students since they were in 1st and 2nd grade, and I get to see them grow up before my eyes.

Most of my students come from families who don't have the resources to provide musical instruments or lessons, so their only access to music instruction is at school.

We love to sing and play xylophone and rhythm instruments; we received a donation of 5 ukuleles last year, and students have loved playing them! I'd like to get enough for the whole class to play, to expand this opportunity to everyone.

My Project

One of the best things about teaching at a K-8 school is the way our elementary (K-5) students are able to look up to our middle school students. My elementary students see middle school students playing guitar and bass and ask, "When do WE get to do that?" Playing ukulele in 4th and 5th grade will set students up for success when they begin playing guitar in middle school--and of course, ukuleles are really fun to play! Much easier than guitars and more accessible for younger students with smaller hands, ukuleles are easy to get started with, which means that students will be playing their favorite songs in no time.
