Ms. Betcher from Philadelphia PA is requesting musical instruments through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Ms. Betcher is requestingWe need baritone ukuleles because they are similar to the guitar and allows you to transfer quickly over to the guitar. We also need soprano ukuleles because they are smaller.

Hi, this is Taylor and Lauren speaking on behalf of Ms. B.'s music class. Almost everyday we are faced with challenges in the classroom to produce music, learn chords and notes. As most of us have little to no instrument or music theory experience, it is difficult to pick up instruments like the guitar and be able to play them well within a few days or even weeks. We only have Ms. Betcher's class 2-3 times a week and trying to learn a new complex instrument like the guitar can be challenging.
The students in our class are well engaged in the activities to learn the guitar and we all have the potential, however, when you are only able to practice and learn that instrument 2-3 times a week, progress is slowly made. Guitars have been a big challenge in the classroom. Most of us struggle because they are a larger instrument and the strings are more complex. The instrument we all have been wanting to learn is the ukulele. Ukuleles are smaller than guitars and they are easier for hands-on learning. They have fewer strings and a smaller neck making it simpler to learn.
Having ukuleles will help my students develop teamwork skills as they learn to play fun songs. Ukuleles are one of the easiest instruments to begin learning on, so learning to play these will build my students' confidence as they learn to read music notes on the staff and learn to read TAB and lead charts.
The goal our class is trying to accomplish is to be able to play the ukulele by the end of the school year. We strive in our classroom environment to learn a new instrument. By having access to ukuleles, it allows us to learn a simpler instrument in the time that we have before the end of the school year.
Being able to lead this project, we will have the ability to raise money for ukuleles in order to benefit the whole class. We will have the ability to create a more diverse instrument environment for not only our class, but for the next one as well. This will give us more ways to learn music.
This project is important to our school community because many kids in our school have been struggling with playing the guitar. The guitar is a little complex for us to understand at first. The Ukulele will provide a bridge in finger development, which can later be transferred to the guitar.
