Ukuleles for Special Needs Classes

My students need ukuleles to expand what we currently do in a middle school general music class. To really capture their interest in performing and creating music.

My Students

While some of my upper elementary and middle school students enjoy singing and dancing, not all do. We have a limited number of instruments that are age appropriate and ukuleles would be a great way to get them all involved in performing and creating in music class.

Several of my classes are compromised of students with behavioral or developmental issues.

These students do not always respond to traditional ways of teaching music and many think the subject is "boring" or "stupid". Many of these students come from low income, single parent families and don't have exposure to instruments other than the percussion instruments we have in the music classroom. They like playing instruments, but by the time they are older, only the drums hold their interest. Bringing in an instrument like the ukulele will expand what kind of lessons I can teach and will give them another instrument to play.

My Project

I am hoping to use the ukuleles in many different ways in my classroom including learning to read notation. They will also be used to encourage students to create their own pieces. We will also explore different styles of music through performance. Outside of music, playing the ukulele will enhance fine motor skills, and will be a tool to help the students learn how to work together in an ensemble.

It will improve my classroom because while I cannot afford a classroom set of instruments myself, nor can my school - it will give the students who normally don't succeed in larger group settings (like band or orchestra) a chance to play an instrument.

For a few, it may spark an interest in learning guitar or another instrument. For others it could give them a sense of accomplishment in learning something they thought was impossible for them to do.
