Several of my classes are compromised of students with behavioral or developmental issues. These students do not always respond to traditional ways of teaching music and many think the subject is "boring" or "stupid". Many of these students come from low income, single parent families and don't have exposure to instruments other than the percussion instruments we have in the music classroom. They like playing instruments, but by the time they are older, only the drums hold their interest. Bringing in an instrument like the ukulele will expand what kind of lessons I can teach and will give them another instrument to play.
