My Project

At our school, our arts-integrated program helps students achieve academic excellence, develop a strong sense of self-worth and learn to embrace challenges. Our students represent a wide range of abilities and include students for whom school is relatively easy as well as those who might be at-risk of disengaging from school. The emphasis on personal artistic expression through visual arts, music and theater allows each student to celebrate their uniqueness without judgment and experience genuine joy at school. As a result, all our students consistently achieve high levels of satisfaction from their educational experience.

A school set of ukuleles that every class at our school can use would enable our students to learn, practice and play stringed instruments in addition to the percussion and wind instruments they currently use.

The Waterman ukuleles are K-5 student-friendly, because the fingerings are easy, and the instruments are light and durable. The number of simple songs students can learn during their twice-a-week music classes is endless, and the community students build when they learn and play music together enhances learning outside of music class. I have observed classes learning to play ukuleles in both traditional classrooms as well as in special education classrooms, and it is truly magical to see a group of students challenge themselves to learn a new song and later perform it for the school and for their families. I would love for the students and families at USCS to be able to enjoy this experience, too.
