Last year 23 ukuleles were donated through DonorsChoose.org. The 4th and 5th grade students learned how to play ukulele, and they now know how to play four chords and play many songs! I am sure some of them will continue playing beyond elementary school.
The students were very excited about learning how to play the ukulele and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
Not only were they excited about playing during the regular music class, they also came to the music room in the morning to practice as well. I am very grateful for the kind donations! This year, since some classes are combined, there will be upwards of 30 students at a time. It would be beneficial for all 30 students to have access to a ukulele for the full 30 minutes of class.
My Project
This is the last part of the ukulele project. I’m asking for seven more soprano ukuleles and five tuners so students have the opportunity, and more time, to play the ukulele. I originally asked for 23 ukuleles since it was enough for each 4th and 5th grade class last year. However, the largest class I will have is thirty students.
It will be great if each student can have an ukulele to play rather than sharing.
More ukuleles will mean more contact time for each student. My students play different varieties of instruments in addition to singing, playing and dancing. Most of the instruments are percussion, such as xylophones, drums, triangles, chimes, tambourines, etc. They also play recorders which belong to the woodwind family. So, adding ukulele to the music program is very exciting because they are now being exposed to the string family of instruments! This is a very unique opportunity for them.
