Our school is an urban magnet school that follows the philosophy of Reggio-Emilia throughout all grades and all classes.
Our students are curious explorers who ask lots of questions as they learn.
They come from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds throughout the city of Indianapolis.
I have incorporated the philosophy of Orff-Schulwerk in my classroom as well. Orff-Schulwerk and Reggio-Emilia both encourage child exploration and discovery - something my students have come to expect in their learning.
"Elemental Music is never just music. It's bound up with movement, dance and speech, and so it is a form of music in which one must participate, in which one is involved not as a listener but as a co-performer." ~ Carl Orff
My Project
Teaching in a building of preschool to eighth grade presents interesting challenges as students age and look for new interests. By middle school my students have spent significant time playing percussion, barred instruments, and recorders and are ready for a new challenge.
Ukuleles are a great beginning instrument that can also make music more exciting as kids graduate up to middle school.
Our instrumental music teacher currently offers a ukulele club but our school would like to give all students the opportunity to experience paying the ukulele.
I personally have little experience with ukulele and have already planned professional development so I can help my students be successful in this new endeavor!
