Ukuleles for 5th grade Curriculum

Help me give my students ukuleles to use in 5th music now and many years to come!

Mrs. Tiomno Acquinton Elementary School
King William, VA Grades 3-5

My Project

The ukulele is an engaging and accessible instrument for elementary students, and offers many educational benefits. Learning ukulele can strengthen students’ understanding of rhythm, melody, harmony, and musical literacy while also encouraging creativity, collaboration, and confidence. Because of its size and relatively simple learning curve, the instrument is especially well suited for younger learners.

Through both personal teaching experience and educational research, the ukulele has proven to be a more accessible and engaging instrument for many students to learn.

Students are often able to experience early success more quickly on the ukulele, which can increase motivation, participation, and overall enjoyment in music class.

Incorporating ukuleles into the curriculum would provide students with more hands-on musical experiences and could help increase student participation and enthusiasm in music classes. It would also support opportunities for performance, cross-curricular connections, and the development of lifelong musical skills.

My vision for implementation would be to incorporate ukuleles into general music instruction to strengthen students’ understanding of rhythm, melody, harmony, and accompaniment skills through hands-on learning. I would also love to use them as part of grade-level performances, allowing students to showcase both singing and instrumental skills in a meaningful and engaging way. Ideally, I would love to be able to implement them into my curriculum next school year beginning in the spring semester. I believe this could greatly increase student participation, confidence, and overall excitement for music education.

I believe that the addition of Ukuleles in the music classroom will allow students to gain new experiences that they otherwise wouldn't be able to experience. Many people in the past have used recorders at the elementary level; however, I feel as though it's time for a change and time for some new experiences to be shared amongst our students now and for many years to come.
