My students need ukuleles so they are able to create harmonies and develop a collaborative environment that forms social bonds between children who sing and play together.
Our school is a culturally diverse urban school with 376 students and 82 percent free and reduced lunch. It is a Title I school and is very diverse. Students come from varying social-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, and home lives. Additionally, we are classified as a medically-fragile school (asthma and diabetes) and have 3 special education classrooms that include students with varying disabilities and developmental delays. About 25 percent receive special education services. 35.3 percent of students are White, 21.8 percent of students are Hispanic/Latino, 2.3 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, 15.3 percent Asian, 19.8 percent Black/African American, 1.8 percent American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4.0 percent identify as two or more races. We have an English Language Learners population of over 100 students and a mobility rate of 76%.
My Project
The classroom sets of ukuleles would be a fantastic learning tool for my students in classroom music. Ukuleles are well-built instruments that have an exceptional sound. Because ukuleles are easy to learn, they have become the beginning instrument for many music students around the nation.
Playing ukulele promotes independent musicianship and vocabulary development.
Students in our school play recorders, barred instruments, and unpitched percussion. Ukuleles would give our students an engaging experience that would include singing and harmonization. Students would be able to use the instruments in the general music classroom for hands-on learning of harmony with chords and chord progressions. Additionally, by working together, students will foster a feeling of community and create a collaborative environment. It is my hope that by creating this musical community, students will become musically independent, so they are able to take that knowledge and apply it to life beyond the classroom.
