My students need ukuleles to enhance their experience in the music room and to help them to become better musicians and readers while improving their finger dexterity.

My Students

My students are in two buildings in grades K-2 and are a joy to be around! They are full of energy and enthusiasm and come to music class ready to learn and explore!

Our school is a rural district in the beautiful hills of Southeastern Ohio.

We live in a low socio-economic region and over 50% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The students work hard each day and are appreciative of each opportunity given to them.

My Project

Having ukuleles in my music classroom will be an exciting addition to the activities and opportunities for learning that are available to my students. Many of them would never have the chance to play a ukulele otherwise.

The ukuleles will be used to help the students with literacy skills by reading the chord symbols on songs as they follow the lyrics.

Learning how to hold the ukulele, along with learning how to strum and play notes and chords, will increase their finger dexterity and encourage concentration. Because of the size of the instruments and the soft strings, I feel that this will give my students a chance to play an instrument that will be fun and increase their understanding of music as well.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
