My Students
For many of my students, every day is a struggle against challenges no one should face. My school is a high poverty (80% free and reduced lunch) rural school filled with students of great potential, passion, and pride.
These students are hungry for the chance to unlock their creative power.
They take every opportunity to sing, dance and play. Many of them love to perform for their peers and families and seek every chance to show what they can do.
While enrollment in choir and music classes has grown 40% over last year, the budget for these programs remains stagnant and necessitates outside fundraising to keep up with the growing demand for music education.
My Project
The "Ukes for Wolves" project is about unlocking the creativity and confidence of our students through playing the ukulele. Ukes are an easy to learn and play chording instrument that students can continue to enjoy their entire lives. With your help, these young people can learn the skills needed to play, create and enjoy a great instrument. Students will use the instruments every day to learn about harmony, melody and accompanying other instruments. Students will also use the ukuleles to engage with other cultures through the playing and singing of music from around the world.
Resources for music education in our community are scarce, and every donation can bring the gift of music to a young person that needs it!
Playing an instrument unlocks creativity, gives a concrete application of abstract concepts like rhythm and harmony and gives students a sense of accomplishment. Everyone can learn to play the ukulele!
