Help me give my students ukuleles so they will be engaged in music performance. Ukuleles are fun and after learning a few simple chords, students will be able to perform many songs in a variety of genres.
I teach band and general music to grades 5-8 at a charter school in Cleveland, Ohio. The students here have diverse backgrounds, but the majority of my students come from low-income families. The students here are creative and imaginative, and full of potential.
Our charter school does not receive the same funding that traditional public schools receive, and so because of this, we often do not have the same access to classroom materials, including musical instruments, which are often expensive.
My students will be excited to learn ukulele. Ukuleles are small (which makes them easy to store and transport) and similar to the guitar, which many middle school students dream of learning. Learning ukulele in music class will inspire them to continue learning and to appreciate music outside of school. A class set of ukuleles will allow for every student to perform at the same time.
Many of our families are not able to provide an instrument, so a class set of ukuleles will give all students the chance to learn and perform an instrument.
The ukuleles will help teach many skills for my middle school general music students, including teamwork, socialization, and musicianship.
