This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to get excited about a movie that was based on a popular book that was "too old for you?" That is how my students are feeling about the buzz surrounding The Hunger Games.

My students are a lively group of 5th graders who love to read, and are eager to participate in book conversations.

Fortunately, the author of The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins, has written a series that is more appropriately targeted to their age group. She describes her first series as a kind of "urban Wonderland" and it is a perfect introduction to dystopia for tweens.

My Project

My students have spent the better part of this school year learning ways to deepen their independent reading and develop their reading tastes. They are eager to explore dystopian novels, but do not need to rush into YA lit just yet. Gregor the Overlander series is a perfect bridge series for them. They can expand their knowledge of author and genre while feeling part of the excitement generated by the popularity of Suzanne Collins' work.

Your donations will make it possible for my students to be part of the social literacy scene so important for the adolescent age group.

Our school does not have a library, and our local public library was closed (only to be reopened with limited hours and funding). I want my students to have access to" with their peers. I want my students to be lifelong readers, and to be part of a bigger conversation surrounding reading .... bigger than "reading just for school."
