Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood," wrote Robert Frost. His poems, and others, inspire students in this poetry elective to read, appreciate, and write poems of their own. Poetry is a non-threatening way to open yourself to the wonders of the world around you, and my students do.
Students in the poetry elective are part of the SAS program at Holmes Middle school.
The School for Advanced Studies provides gifted and honor students unique opportunities to explore their world with an in depth study of poetry. Holmes is a title one school with a multitude of ethnic backgrounds. My poetry students gain confidence as they write and read their poems to the group. Most English classes do not have the time for an in depth study of poetry. This elective allows students to immerse themselves in an art form that can add beauty to their world and an appreciation for the power of words.
My Project
I am requesting materials for the culminating project of this poetry class; a book of the student's original poetry. Throughout the semester students participate in activities designed to inspire their imaginations. They listen to whales, eagles, and wolves and write sound poems. They explore unusual smells and write color poems about memories associated with a scent. They explore shells, music boxes and kaleidoscopes and write amazing poems as they put themselves inside their favorites. The supplies they need to create their original book of poetry are binding combs, cardstock, and fine point markers.
Many students enter the poetry elective saying they "hate poetry," but all leave with a greater appreciation of poetry and many say they write poetry on their own to help them deal with the emotions of middle school. Their own poetry book is a tangible reminder of their progress as "poets."
This project is important because students have a book of their own poems as a reminder of their hard work.
They take pride in their books and can't wait to read their poems aloud to their classmates and families in the "Poetry Jam," which is an afternoon event where they share their poems with teachers, administrators, parents and other students.
