Students in the poetry elective are part of the SAS program at Holmes Middle school. The School for Advanced Studies provides gifted and honor students unique opportunities to explore their world with an in depth study of poetry. Holmes is a title one school with a multitude of ethnic backgrounds. My poetry students gain confidence as they write and read their poems to the group. Most English classes do not have the time for an in depth study of poetry. This elective allows students to immerse themselves in an art form that can add beauty to their world and an appreciation for the power of words.
