Two Most Important Words in the Dictionary... Tolerance, & Love!
Help me give my students Sensory lighting, swivel chairs, learning tools, magnets, and jackets to support them when they're feeling fragile and calm them when they're feeling like a volcano...creating a zen classroom for discovery.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
When a child is born, their world is completely changed & met with stressors. The newborn leaves behind the womb's security, where one was developing for nine months while listening to their mother's heartbeat, & is greeted by the sounds of a bustling, cold delivery room with bright lights. Having a baby can be rewarding, but it can be painfully traumatic without advanced preparation. Many things can go wrong. Somehow, babies can navigate the world & learn ways to cope & meet their needs by nurturing adults. They develop cries as their first means of communication & expression.
According to Merriam-Webster, tolerance is the capacity to endure pain or hardship.
It is the attitude of acceptance, patience, & understanding. Many are surrounded by insurmountable stressors like living daily in toxic environments. Unlike a newborn, their cries aren't heard. Many lack nurturing adults capable of teaching them ways to self-soothe, cope, persevere, & survive. They're learning as they go how to get their basic needs met. Every child should have the chance to grow up to be their best possible self. But how can a child accomplish this when growing up in toxic environments surrounded by daily stressors? How can they care about tomorrow when they're trying their best to survive today & struggle with forgetting the past that haunts them? How can they dream when they're consumed with worry about where they're going to sleep, who'll be there when they get home & so much more than we can imagine?
By creating an action-based learning classroom, we'll make a difference in their learning by improving their school lives & hopefully teaching them life rules. The action-based learning equipment will provide them different techniques to self-soothe when they are ready to fight or fight! Self-care isn't selfish!
