Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thanks to the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society, we have a great opportunity to learn about birds!
My students are incredible!
I have 28 motivated English Learner students eager to learn. My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available. We are a Title 1, Performance Improvement school with 100% free lunch program. Many parents work 2 jobs and are struggling to support the family.
Though their environment may not be conducive to learning, they have an insatiable love of learning! I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
All year long we have been environmentally conscious about our natural resources and how the sun is a source of sustainable energy. We are also aware of the importance of recycling, especially in our classroom. Students know that by recycling paper we are saving trees. Now I want to tie in a unit of study on birds and their reliance on trees. We will read books about birds during Language Arts, research birds during Science, and listen to sounds that birds make using the plush birds. Last, we will make unique birdhouses as our culminating art activity.
Birds are an integral part of the ecosystem.
They help control our rodent and insect population as well as distributing seeds that lead to forest conservation. By learning about birds, the students will see the relationship nature provides to sustain equilibrium on Earth.
