Twisting and Turning Our Way Through Phonics

My students need the change-a-sound flip books, twist and turn letter builders, and headphones to help them manipulate and hear sounds as they start the first stages of the reading process.

My Students

We are a Title l school, which means that at least 50% of our student population receive free and reduced-price lunches. I would like help purchasing some much-needed classroom supplies so that each student will have the opportunity to learn with phonics manipulatives for hands-on learning.

By funding this project, you will put the reading in our phonics program.

I bet you are asking how on earth do you do that? I am wanting to teach beginning sounds, along with eventually sounding and blending out words. What better way to demonstrate this than by having children move around the room with as they manipulate, twist, and turn letters to discover new words, all the while reading as they go! Just wait until they come home to tell you all about it. Please consider donating to my project and helping to aid your child in their wonderful learning experience.

My Project

I teach my students that letters make sounds and sounds make words. This is the first stage of learning to read. As students first start out by using flip books to better understand sounds, and connect those sounds to words, they will be able to move on to utilizing the twist and turn letter rods to create their own new words. Imagine the excitement as students come up and talk and share about all of the new words they are making. I will then incorporate technology into the classroom, as students use headphones, to listen and identify words they are learning by clicking and manipulating their way through educational websites. Please consider donating to a classroom that will become wonderful readers next year!
