Our students come from all around the world! Our inner city school is both a music magnet and home base for newly arrived English Language learners.
Our students speak over twenty different languages at home, but we all speak MUSIC at school.
Many of our students (about 95%) live in poverty, and most (91%) are students of color. We may not have much, but we have a rich musical experience at school.
We ALL get to learn how to play the piano and violin, and we start in kindergarten. Many of our students continue to play both instruments throughout grade school, and continue on in middle and high school as well.
Over 350 preschool through second graders learn how to play the violin in our inner city school. I have been gradually replacing old, broken bows, and now it is time to help our littlest ones "shine". Having a working bow means that even our youngest can play the violin with beautiful tone.
Twice a week, 150 enchanted young children walk through my door for "special violin day"; our students don't have many material possessions, but they have hearts filled with the joy of music making.
It is my privilege to share with them the eternal, universal, invaluable gift of music.
