We are a diverse group of students with about half of our students learning English as their second language. Many students who are recent refugees, as well as students from all around the world, attend here. About 97% live in poverty; over 90% are students of color. But music fills our hallways and our hearts! It's a great unifying factor in our elementary school, where every child gets to be a star on stage at least once a year. All of our students learn how to play the violin in preschool-2nd grade. All K-5 students spend one week a month in my keyboard lab. About half of our school chooses to participate in an additional performing group: choir, band or orchestra. We believe that music teaches our students how to recognize and regulate their emotions, given the many challenges in their lives. Music equips our students to work together, to persevere, to strive for excellence, and to dream big dreams. Music also helps us play and celebrate every day.
