I am a first-year teacher, and I teach first grade at P.S. 326 in Brooklyn. Over 70 percent of the children in my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. There is also a high population of students in the English as a Second Language program. P.S. 326 is a small school that includes pre-kindergarten through first grade. Since it is a smaller school, the budget is also smaller than the budgets of larger schools. We are currently using the Everyday Math Program. While I follow the program closely, I like to supplement with other materials so my students are exposed to a variety of teaching and learning materials. I have been looking at the math program and what I have for the students to use already and can see that I need more materials. I want to help my students in every way that I can, so I would love to provide them with more math manipulatives. I found that my students are still having trouble sorting objects, and I would love them to master this skill. In order to do this I would like to provide them with lots of sorting manipulatives. These manipulatives would also be used in other ways as well. They will serve as counters when doing addition and subtraction problems. Students will also use them to solve number stories. My students benefit from the hands-on learning approach and would love the colorful manipulatives that are available today. Childcraft has a super sorting kit that has over 620 color-coordinated sorting items with bowls, trays, and activity cards that would benefit all twenty-two students in my classroom. I would also love a Teddy Bear Sorting Kit that comes with six different colored bear and matching trays. My students would also benefit from having manipulatives that would work on patterns. They would be able to use all of the sorting materials for patterns, and I would love to provide them with patterns for pattern blocks since we already have the blocks in the classroom. Lastly, I would love pegboards and pegs. Having these materials would allow my students to create designs and pictures, sort the pegs by size, color, and shape, and create unique patterns. The best thing about all of these math manipulatives is that my students would play with them during math, centers, and fun time. I would love them to play with learning materials during fun time, and I know these materials would get used every day! Thank you in advance for your generous donation. I have twenty-two eager children ready to learn with their new math manipulatives.
