This is my second year teaching in my current school district and my first year in this fantastic elementary school. I am in a K-4 building that currently has over 325 students. It is a Title I school and over 85% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. The teachers that work with these students everyday are wonderful and have created great learning environments for every child. They are doing everything they can in the classroom to help these struggling students. I am one of the lucky reading teachers that gets to work with both kindergarten and first grade students every day. The kids that I see in both grades are reading and writing well below the average students in their grade. The kindergarten students are still working on knowing their first and last names and most cannot write their names. They have no sound knowledge and no knowledge of how to form their letters. The first graders are lacking the basic skills that most teachers take for granted. I am doing everything that I can to help!
