First grade galore! These munchkins at this age are one of the best ages to teach. They are curious, hard-working, and always up for a good challenge or exploration.
I have a very diverse group, some still learning the English language.
Because I am in an integrated co-teaching environment, some of my students in first grade also have Individualized Education Plans based on their special needs such as Speech and Language Impairment or Occupational Therapy. Most families here are low-income and students eat free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch. Everyone is hard working and incredibly sweet!
My Project
Books here, books there, books everywhere! Except what's better than just a book? One that's interesting and motivates you all around! This year, first graders did a lot of cool writing and over the summer, a lot of those ideas and skills generally get lost or forgotten. I would love for each of my students to take home "Ralph Tells A Story" because it is a great read for all ages. Not only have my students read it already this year, but they can read it for years, each time remembering that no matter where they are or when, there is always a story to tell. Hopefully this will motivate them when it comes to planning their stories in second grade and up. The other book I would love for them to read over the summer is Katie Woo and her Big Ideas! We studied Katie Woo's character during our fiction study, but there are so many in this series that the kids have never read this particular one! I hope to motivate them by using this book to show them even a fictional character such as Katie has big (and small) idea and they are all important! Lastly, I'm asking for digital bookmarks that can help them keep track of how long they're reading each day!
Lawrence Clark Powell once said, "Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow." No matter how few or many words or pictures a book has, kids can grow, enjoy, and learn from it, and that is what I hope for with this project.
During summer, they can also use these blank books to create their own stories of their summer adventures!
