Turning Math Into Aha! Moments

Help me give my students the hands-on math tools they need to turn confusion into confidence. With interactive items algebra tiles, graphing boards, fraction and decimal models, my sixth graders will be able to explore challenging math concepts.

My Project

Math can feel overwhelming for many sixth graders because so many of the concepts they encounter are abstract. Students are expected to work with variables, ratios, fractions, decimals, coordinate planes, and geometry while explaining their mathematical thinking. Too often, they are asked to solve problems using only paper and pencil before they truly understand what the numbers represent. My goal is to change that by giving students opportunities to see, touch, build, and explore mathematics in meaningful ways.

With algebra tiles, coordinate graphing boards, fraction and decimal models, graphing tools, and other hands-on manipulatives, my students will be able to model equations, investigate proportional relationships, graph points, compare fractions and decimals, and discover mathematical patterns through active learning.

Instead of memorizing procedures, they will develop the conceptual understanding needed to solve problems with confidence. These resources will support whole-group instruction, small-group intervention, math stations, and collaborative learning, ensuring every student has opportunities to engage with grade-level standards in ways that match their learning needs.

By supporting this project, you will help transform math from a subject that students fear into one they understand and enjoy. These hands-on tools will create countless "aha!" moments as students build confidence, strengthen their problem-solving skills, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematics that will prepare them for success in sixth grade, on the North Carolina End-of-Grade assessment, and beyond.
