I work in a school with students that come from all types of backgrounds. My students struggle with their learning skills academically, socially, and emotionally. They each have an IEP and stay in my special education classroom for the majority of their day. Each student is unique in their ability to process the world around them, communicate with others about their needs, and what they know, as well as their development.
Each of my students comes to me with an individualized education plan that I work each day to meet and help them overcome their learning challenges.
They need a small group setting, repeated instruction, and opportunities to handle an overload of information.
My Project
In each learning unit, my students learn about a science or social studies topic. They build their vocabulary, they work on different STEM projects immersing them in opportunities to manipulate materials and expand their thinking.
In addition, we learn songs that go along with each unit and practice playing them on instruments.
We have used keyboards, xylophones, and lap harps. It has provided each of my students with a chance to experience another style of learning.
With this project, I am working to purchase better quality keyboards, and add panda drums into their repertoire of instruments to play. The panda drums are labeled and will provide a more concrete way for my students to learn how to create and keep a beat.
