Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are smart young people who are very active and curious about almost everything. Our elementary school is a K-5th grade STEAM magnet school, serving the racially diverse community that makes up the Linda Vista neighborhood of San Diego. Our students are 57% Hispanic, 20% Asian, 3% African American, and 7% Caucasian. All of our students qualify for Free and Reduced lunch and our school has received Title I designation based on the socioeconomic designation of their parents. We have a makerspace, a learning garden, and a computer take-home program. Teachers at our school work hard to infuse a "design thinking process" throughout our curriculum.
My Project
I want to help kindergarten be a place where students of all learning styles feel included and celebrated. I have a lot of content and curriculum for traditional learning, but I really want to include music to stimulate the needs of my all of students who need more "hands-on" and active learning. My dream is to see and hear my students participating in a loud, joyful expression of learning.
Studies show that putting instruments in the hands of young children ignites all areas of their development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy.
According to experts in the field of child development, introducing children to music helps their bodies and minds to work together. Exposing children to music during early development also helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. It is for all of these reasons and so many more that I hope to get these instruments for my classroom.
