Our public school opened four years ago. While we have a new building, we are missing many of the things a school that has been open for a long time has. We are also working to build community with our families who are often untrusting of the public school system.
Our students come from all over San Francisco and are a very diverse group of kids.
The majority of our students get free or reduced-price lunch, and many live in public housing. Many of our students struggle with reading, and this impacts them in all of their classes.
My Project
Many of our students struggle with academic work. As the librarian and makerspace coordinator, I get to invite teachers to bring their classes to make the work more meaningful by helping them showcase their work. I would like to create a book making station to encourage students who aren't excited about writing.
Our students will bind books and create block print illustrations to give their writing a professional feel.
By adding a step like this students are able to see the value in creating writing even if they are reluctant. Many students are motivated by the promise to show their creative site as part of the project. The materials in this project will allow students to bind books. Students learn how to use a bone folder to create perfect creases. They will use an awl to poke holes and special needles to sew their books. They will also use special cutting tools to cut a rubber pad to create block prints. They will use a roller to make prints to illustrate their work.
