This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, motivated children who love to dance. More than three quarters of my students are from low incomes homes. For many of them, their only exposure to the arts is at school. The dance program takes them from first grade through fifth grade, allowing them to grow in knowledge and experience. By fifth grade, they are choreographing their own dances for performance.

Our dance program is structured to provide students with plenty of opportunities for creative thinking, supporting them in developing their imaginations and creativity.

We learn from each other, as they continually surprise me with their ideas and thinking.

My Project

I am requesting support to purchase a new iPod to replace the one I currently use, which is ten years old and no longer reliable. Most of my students come from low income homes and schools is the only place where they have access to the arts. I want them to have an enriching experience in an environment complete with the resources they need for a stimulating and rigorous introduction to the art of dance.

Although my students love to play freeze dance as a reward for work well done, I don't appreciate it when my iPod decides to play freeze dance in the middle of a lesson.

My students will be in the middle of creating or performing a dance, and the music will suddenly stop. The pacing of the class will be interrupted as I shut down and reboot my iPod.

Using an iPod to house and play my music, along with a bluetooth speaker, allows me to move around my classroom, stopping and starting the music from anywhere in the room without being tied to a sound cart. An iPod also allows the students to use the app Tempo Slow and modify the tempo of the music as the students are learning. The music can be slowed down as they first learn the steps and gradually sped up until it is up to tempo as the students become more comfortable with the dance. Your support would help in providing my students with a dance program that focuses on the students' needs, instead of the shortcomings of old technology.
