My Students

Imagine having a CD player with your favorite music and no way to turn it on! Think of your child trying to play a favorite computer game without the controller. My students want to play Cd's, audio books and computer games; however, they’re not able to find or push the small buttons.

My students, ages 5-22 yrs.

old, love music and audio books. They also enjoy computer games and activities. My students with multiple disabilities are not able to come to a classroom due to their medical needs. I have the privilege of being the Home Instructor for this great group of diverse students. This school program is located in a county of severe economic depression due to the loss of many jobs. Meeting basic needs is a challenge for the families and school.

My Project

Switch adapted items help my students gain more independence. CD players and computers are a fun way to include this important skill. This CD player has a cord for using large or light pressure switches in place of the traditional small buttons. My students will be able to turn this player on independently. The colorful Big Track ball acts like a computer mouse. It provides a large surface for cursor movement and distinctly placed large buttons for the mouse clicks. In addition, my students with spatial or vision difficulties will have the option of connecting separate switches to act as the mouse clicks. These items encourage my students to use their muscles, vision and spatial skills while learning.
